What to Expect When Attending a Wine Tasting

A wine tasting is a type of product sampling. The purpose from the producer's point of view is to offer a sample size (usually 15-30 ml) of their product so that the consumer may make a decision about purchasing.

The beauty of wine is that there are differences every vintage (year)-giving us wine-drinkers to excuse to attend wine tastings all the time!

Now 15 or 30 ml may not sound like much, but many wine producers will have between 5 and 15 wines available for tasting – that equates to 2 or 3 glasses! Wine tasting events should have available spittoons. They can look like an ice bucket that is placed on the tasting table, or there may be a purpose-built counter top spittoon. Sometimes there are floor-stand spittoons placed around the event space.

A spittoonoffers you somewhere to dispose of wine samples that you don't care for, or to spit wine out once you've got an idea of the taste of the wine.

Other notable features at a wine tasting includes:

* Dry bread or crackers. These plain foods absorb flavours from within your mouth, in order to get you ready for the next big wine.
* Water. Water rinses food particles from the mouth rinses your glass between wines, and is a great to rehydrate!
* Cheese and other snacks. Many wines truly taste better if drunk with food.
* Producer's tasting notes. These act as a guide, prompting you to identify the flavours you are tasting. Individual flavours are largely based on personal experience so feel free to add your own comments!
* Special Offers. Wine producers know that ifyou try their wines and like them, then they usually only have a small window of time to close the sale. With this in mind, they create ' event-only ' special offers. A win-win situation, I'd say.

Now that you know what a wine tasting is all about, what does it cost? At wineries, expect to pay a nominal fee (up to $ 10) to taste a range of wines. This fee is often refundable upon purchase of wine. At a market festival or event where there may be many wine producers, expect to pay either an entrance fee or a glass-fee. Once you pay this you will be given a glass and the number of tastings you indulges in is entirely up to you.
